Kremlin says Russia is closely watching developments in Venezuela
Last week, internal US government documents obtained by media outlets suggested that Maduro sent a letter to Putin seeking “defensive radars, aircraft repairs and potentially missiles,” which were expected to be delivered during a visit to Moscow by a senior aide. The documents reportedly also included a separate letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping requesting “expanded military cooperation” to counter “the escalation between the US and Venezuela.”
“We are watching very closely what is happening in Venezuela,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian state news agency Tass on Sunday. He added that Moscow maintains communication with Caracas due to various treaty obligations.
“Of course, we want everything to remain peaceful and for no new conflicts to arise in the region. The world is already full of conflicts. New conflicts are not needed,” Peskov said, referring to the increasing tensions between Washington and Caracas.
Reports note that the US has carried out more than a dozen strikes on vessels it claims are involved in drug trafficking from Venezuelan waters, resulting in at least 61 deaths since September. The US has not publicly provided evidence to substantiate these claims, while Maduro has rejected all accusations.
