Venezuelans previously under TPS can apply for US asylum
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said that individuals who had benefited from the program are eligible to pursue refugee protections, according to statements made in a televised interview.
“Every individual that was under TPS has the opportunity to apply for refugee status, and that evaluation will go forward,” Noem said.
She noted that temporary protected status had been revoked last year for roughly 600,000 Venezuelans who were granted the designation under the previous administration.
At the same time, Noem stressed that enforcement efforts would continue against certain individuals, adding that the US would keep deporting “criminals to face consequences in their country,” she said.
Separately, President Donald Trump said over the weekend that US military operations had led to the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, first lady Cilia Flores. He also indicated that Washington intends to impose American authority over Venezuela for the time being, including the possible deployment of US troops if deemed necessary.
