Venezuela’s vice president gets sworn in as acting head of state
The oath was administered before the National Assembly in Caracas, where Delcy Rodriguez invoked the legacy of the late Venezuelan leader, declaring, “I swear by Commander Hugo Chavez,” as she addressed lawmakers. During her remarks, she expressed anguish over the capture of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
Speaking emotionally about the events, Rodriguez said, “I come with pain for the kidnapping of two heroes that we have as hostages in the United States of North America,” referring to the detained president and first lady.
According to reports, Maduro and Flores were seized in a pre-dawn operation on Saturday by US forces, then transported out of Venezuela and flown to New York. There, they appeared in an initial court proceeding to face charges related to narcotics and weapons offenses.
In the wake of Maduro’s detention, Venezuela’s Supreme Court issued an order instructing Vice President Rodriguez to “immediately” take over the duties of acting president. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has stated that Washington intends to exercise control over Venezuela for the time being, including the possible deployment of American troops if deemed necessary.
