Venezuelan’s Opposition Leader Defends Her Movement's Legitimacy

(MENAFN) Venezuelan opposition figure Maria Corina Machado declared Tuesday that her movement holds legitimate authority to govern the nation following President Nicolas Maduro's detention by American forces, despite rival power structures solidifying control in Caracas.

Speaking with media, Machado asserted that following Maduro's apprehension during a U.S. military operation in the previous week's opening days, "the people of Venezuela have already chosen" the country's rightful leadership.

When pressed on whether this signaled her assumption of national command, Machado responded: "Absolutely yes," emphasizing her coalition's readiness to accept governmental duties.

"We are ready and willing to serve our people, as we have been mandated," she said.

Machado, a former legislative member prohibited from participating in Venezuela's contentious 2024 presidential contest, endorsed seasoned diplomat Edmundo Gonzalez as her alliance's nominee.

Washington and multiple international governments subsequently acknowledged Gonzalez as president-elect, referencing accusations of electoral fraud orchestrated by the Maduro administration.

Leadership future remains uncertain
Notwithstanding Machado's claims of widespread backing, her physical return to Venezuela and potential formal governance position remain ambiguous.

Interim President Delcy Rodriguez, who previously functioned as Maduro's vice president, has taken the oath of office and presently exercises executive powers. Machado rejected Rodriguez as "nothing like a moderate," stating "nobody trusts her," while highlighting her pivotal involvement in the prior regime.

Machado also responded to commentary from U.S. political leaders casting doubt on her leadership capabilities.

Following President Donald Trump's statement, "She's a very nice woman, but she doesn't have the respect," Machado expressed gratitude for authorizing the mission resulting in Maduro's capture.

"President Trump's leadership and courage has brought Nicolas Maduro to face justice and this is huge," she said. "This is a major step towards restoring prosperity and rule of law and democracy in Venezuela."
