Trump shares photo calling himself “Acting President of Venezuela”

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday shared a post on his Truth Social platform presenting himself as the “Acting President of Venezuela,” just days after a U.S. military mission resulted in the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

The post identified Trump as the country’s acting head as of January 2026. Earlier this month, on January 3, American forces detained Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, with plans to prosecute them in New York on charges linked to drugs and weapons. Trump has stated that during a transitional period, his administration would “run” Venezuela and oversee its oil industry.

In the wake of Maduro’s arrest, Vice President Delcy Rodrigues was sworn in as interim president. Despite the upheaval, Venezuela’s new leadership has continued dialogue with Washington. A U.S. delegation of diplomatic and security officials has traveled to Caracas to evaluate the possibility of reopening the American embassy.
