US lawmakers support Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado

(MENAFN) US lawmakers have expressed support for Venezuelan opposition figure Maria Corina Machado as a potential leader following the abduction of President Nicolas Maduro, according to reports.

Members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously endorsed Machado after a closed-door meeting with her on Capitol Hill. Machado, a former congresswoman with long-standing ties to Washington, has led anti-government protests and accused Maduro of “illegally” seizing power during the 2024 elections. She was previously barred from holding public office amid allegations of supporting foreign sanctions and calling for US military intervention.

Texas Representative Michael McCaul praised Machado, saying she has “all the right stuff” to become Venezuela’s next president and emphasized the importance of “free and fair elections.”

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast added that the US would play a role in future Venezuelan elections, highlighting the “huge” stakes for a country he described as “in our backyard.”

Machado has supported US intervention in Venezuela and the capture of Maduro earlier this month. In December, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts toward a “just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy,” which she later presented to President Donald Trump.
